A lifesaving building safety option

What is Injectaclad?

Injectaclad is an acrylic-based graphite fire-stopping material, developed and independently tested by leading fire protection experts to meet regulatory requirements. Installed using a patented injection method, the material is pumped into cavities to the required depth and width, forming a continuous linear fire barrier supported by a reinforcing mesh and holding pins.

When exposed to heat, Injectaclad reacts as an intumescent material, expanding significantly while reducing in density. This reaction seals the cavity and forms a compliant barrier that restricts the spread of smoke and fire between compartments within the external wall construction.

Why Injectaclad?

Defective cavity barriers pose a serious risk to life and property, enabling rapid fire to spread that is extremely tough to extinguish. Injectaclad is a specialist, engineered remediation system designed to reinstate cavity barriers, providing maximum protection with minimal disruption.

Injectaclad is retrospectively installed without requiring the removal of facades, making it both cost and time effective. This non-intrusive solution enhances fire safety while allowing buildings to remain occupied, minimising disruption to residents and delivering a faster, more efficient route to compliance for building owners.

How does Injectaclad work?

  • Small access holes are created to inject an acrylic-based graphite into building cavities, working horizontally or around any openings, such as windows and doors.
  • When fire strikes, the material rapidly expands and hardens creating a dense barrier, protecting buildings and lives from the spread of fire.
  • Injectaclad provides rapid, concealed fire protection by creating a robust cavity barrier without invasive construction work.

Case Studies

PBSA, Coventry

Challenge

A live, occupied PBSA building was found to have serious external wall fire safety defects, including missing cavity fire barriers, combustible façade materials and water ingress. Enforcement action and potential closure were imminent, while works had to be delivered on a constrained site with students in residence.

Solution

Global HSE Group used Injectaclad cavity fire barriers to reinstate fire stopping behind brick façades without wholesale removal. A non-compliant timber-clad elevation was fully replaced with compliant materials, and façade detailing was redesigned to restore compartmentation and address water ingress. The building remained operational throughout and achieved full compliance, satisfying the fire brigade’s requirements.

Housing Association, Gosport

Challenge

Following a major fire, a housing association needed urgent assurance that remaining blocks were safe for reoccupation. Intrusive surveys revealed extensive failures in external wall fire barriers, internal compartmentation and escape routes, under intense public and regulatory scrutiny.

Solution

Global HSE Group delivered a comprehensive remediation programme, using Injectaclad cavity barriers to reinstate external fire stopping with minimal disruption. Internal compartmentation, ceilings and fire doors were upgraded, and legacy defects were identified and resolved. The works restored full fire integrity, enabling residents to safely return home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Injectaclad?

It is a remedial system used to fix missing or defective cavity barriers, stopping the spread of fire and smoke within a building’s structure.

How is it installed?

Injectaclad is installed by injecting material into the cavity through small holes, reducing the need to remove façade materials and creating minimal disruption.

What buildings can it be used on?

Injectaclad is used on high-rise, commercial, and residential buildings, including timer-framed, steel frame and brick structures.

How long does it last?

It has been tested to have a working life of 50 years.

How does it work?

It creates a passive fire barrier that expands when exposed to heat, sealing voids to block fire and smoke spread.

Is it tested and compliant?

Yes, Injectaclad is designed for compliance with fire safety regulations. It has also been tested in both vertical and horizontal configurations. It is also installed under Global’s third party quality assurance scheme with IFC.

Does it require removal of existing insulation?

No, Injectaclad is specifically designed to work with existing insulation already present in the cavity.
